Kathy OConner
Secretary of the Board
Starting with traditional art instruction at the American Academy of Art, Chicago, Kathy OConner developed a passion for creating expressive works. The Academy promoted a very disciplined, conservative art practice, which gave her a strong basis in drawing, composition and color theory.
With a move to Colorado and starting a family, OConner, like many women, allowed her art to take a back seat to raising and supporting my family. During this time she completed murals for restaurants, private homes, and even garage doors. Always active in the community, she directed a community volunteer bank, ran workshops and special events, and chaired the Colorado Women’s Chamber of Commerce.
Over the years OConner discovered a new way of expression through intuitive art. This was an exciting merging of representational and abstract concepts. From this work she developed her own workshop for children and adults, Paint Like Crazy. These intuitive art sessions allowed adults and children to paint from their own feelings and subconscious associations. A marvelous stress reliever without the pressure of creating something “good.” The Lakewood Cultural Center in Colorado Paint Like Crazy workshops for a year as part of its curriculum.
In 2021, OConner had the very clear realization that it was now or never to become the artist she was always meant to be and began devoting herself full time to her art. Her current practice includes abstract works in acrylic and mixed media. Her life experience provides a wealth of inspiration to express the emotions of living a full life. Love and loss, grief, anxiety, and joy—-for herself and others.
In 2023, 40 West Arts District, Lakewood, Colorado, awarded OConner one of 2 Artists in Residencies with a full time studio and exhibition and community outreach opportunities. During this period she conducted community art workshops; provided Art for Anxiety sessions for the homeless, and exhibited locally and out-of-state. In addition OConner helped launch Genesis Gallery at Lakewood United Methodist Church, including redesigning a tired meeting room into exhibit space, curating shows, social media and marketing.
Oneness is an important component OConner’s mission now: to capture those emotions which cannot be defined by representational art, while creating a community of support and connection for those with basic needs. She finds great joy in collaborating with non-profits to fundraise through art sales.
Andre Van Hall
Advisor
Andre says that Oneness is when all ones can use curiosity to bridge the divide between ones self and the world around them, and to instigate real world change. Andre believes that all Ones who wish to can create the world they want by listening and being curious rather than being entrenched in one's own belief systems. Andre knows that by fostering curiosity all ones can initiate positive change in the world, and adapt to difficult changes quickly.
In The Curiosity of Change – How to Bring Light to the Dark Side of Change” André tells personal stories from his 40-year career in the hospitality business as well as what happened when he was diagnosed that he would be blind in two weeks, and subsequently, when he lost his job, and got cancer that metastasized.
